Carole Devillers, author of this blog: I’m a photo-journalist with several articles in National Geographic Magazine to my credit, two about Haiti (text and photos for Of Gods and Saints, voodoo pilgrimages in Haiti, March 85; and contributing photographer for Haiti – Against all odds, November 87). I spent almost two decades in Haiti and founded a non-profit organization PATCH-Haiti (Photography in Aid To Children of Haiti) to help with programs for needy children. As a ten-year photo correspondent for Reuters News Pictures in Haiti, from 1990 to 2000, I covered the political unrest and street battles in Port-au-Prince. I’m now based in Albuquerque, NM, USA where I freelance and lead my own photo tours in NM and abroad through my outfit Adventure Photo Expeditions.
Mission to Haiti: Journal: In Haiti from Feb 21, 2010 to March 06, 2010: First time in Haiti since the earthquake. My self-assigned mission is to document the relief efforts organized by a Haitian grassroots organization, ORE (Organization for the Rehabilitation of the Environment) and see for myself how Haitian victims of the earthquake are faring. ORE is a reliable, trustworthy organization recognized internationally, founded and run by dear friends of mine, whom I support totally. I used the first weeks following the earthquake to do fund raisers in Albuquerque NM, raising for ORE some $4,000 from the sale of my photographs. More fund raisers are planned in NM during the year, to benefit ORE and PATCH-Haiti.
